It’s been a while since I gave a little update on the market basket bag 2.0. You might have seen some sneak previews on my Instagram though if you’ve missed it, sit tight and read on!
Where did we leave off…
If you’ve missed the first two parts of the market basket bag 2.0, make sure you read up on it if you want to follow the complete making of! You can find them here and here.
In the last part, you could read about the contrasting color choices of the thread and that there was a lot (read: a lot) of stitching to do to give all the panels a bottom border of leather.
Since I am working with woven leather, it can unravel at any moment if you, first don’t bind the edges with this technique and secondly don’t use leather on all the edges. So on the bottom part, I made a strap of leather which will finally

Double stitching on th panels
I did a double stitching on the panels, there were two panels per bag and 2 bags to make. 8 rows of stitching just to get some leather on to the bottom…. and no bag that is getting into shape yet. Well, I do not complain. I could do this all by machine but I like to do it by hand. For me, it is almost relaxing to just sew everything together. Besides, even though I know it might be more laborious, it will pay off in quality and durability of the stitching. So when I do it, I want to do it well.

Combine the panels
The next step was to combine all the panels into one long piece. First, all the edges were finished, with edge dye and beeswax for water resistance. Next, with this strap in between the panels, I covered two woven edges at once. Since, when you’ve sewed these pieces together, no fraying is possible anymore.

2 bags at the same time – double the work
Currently, I am making two bags at the same time. It is double the work but you can really focus on just one task twice. I think this might be easier than first finishing one bag and than continue to the next. But I will give you a little update on my thoughts once I’ve actually finished both the bags. I will be able to compare them and see the results of ‘focusing on one task twice’.
Next, I am starting on the handles… If you want to read already a bit about handles. I’ve got a complete series about them here! Until then you can check my Instagram for more updates on the Market Basket bag 2.0.
