Of all the bag designers I could write about, it seemed appropriate to choose an American one for this post. I got my first designer bag from him and love most of his designs! The brand is known for it’s sporty but elegant designs. Today I will discuss everything I learned about and want to learn from Michael Kors!
Let’s go back
Michael Kors was born in 1959 in Long Island as Karl Anderson Jr. but changed his first and last name when his mother remarried. He was already into fashion at a very young age. This might have been due to his mothers modeling career. He studied fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and at the age of nineteen he got his first collection at Bergdorf.
After this collection, he was ready to start his own brand and KORS. Besides his own brand, he also designed collections for Celine until 2004. Both lines of designs were very popular throughout the years.
Some famous designs
A little while ago it was very popular to have a Michael Kors bag. This resulted also in a large fake market of the designer bags, even though compared to other IT -bags the designs of Michael Kors are quite affordable. They range from ‘cheap’, about 100 dollars to ‘expensive’, about 18.000 dollars.
The most popular bags designed by him are:
– Actually, all bags of the jet set collection are very popular
– the Mercer bag –> I got one of these!!!
– Selma bag for its sharp triangular shaped “gussets”
What do I want to learn from this master?
Well, first of all, I love almost all of his designs. Clean lines and the combination of sporty but elegance makes his designs beautiful. I like to take a closer look at the designs and try to learn how to simplify a bag design.
Besides his bags, he did and still does a great job at creating a unique brand, affordable but luxurious. What does make the difference between this brand and any other, that everyone wants a Michael Kors bag? He really made the brand reachable during his time on Project Runway and in several movies or TV shows. That is something to explore and see what works and what does not.
A fashion lover, designer, and artist he creates masterpieces for a large audience. He is an icon in the fashion world and has a brand without limitations. He is a true inspiration to me but not only him but ofcourse all his designs as well. What do you think of him/his designs?
