We’ve been discussing bag design for a while now. But the fact remains, when you want to make your own bag, designing might be one of largest parts of it. In the post about fast fashion, I describe the difference between a well-made bag with quality and a bag with less quality, cheaper but designed according to the latest trends. This made me think, isn’t it possible to have a little of both…? How can I make a well-made quality bag that is trendy but can I use for years and years to come? Why can’t we make it timeless & trendy?
A timeless bag
Bags like the ones I describe in the big bag dictionary are today the day, the classics. These designs are made over and over, in the past centuries. Tough people still buy them… What is it about them that make people still want them, even the vintage ones? Well, there isn’t any proof but I think, they update the timeless designs to the latest trends.
A trendy bag
When you see the bags they cell in fast fashion stores, you can imagine they won’t reinvent the wheel. It is really hard to come up with something totally original. As I tell in the history of the bucket bag you can see that it dates back to many years before Mansur Gavriel made it popular again. Afterwards, it began a trend, now it can be found in most fashion shops. That’s why you probably recognise the shape and like it…
A timeless & trendy bag
Since I got the book bag design, I started drawing more and more designs. They show you how to draw the basics and you can fill in the details. That’s when I came up with the thought. Why not combine the two but make it in such manner you can update your same quality made bag over and over again, to make it trendy again over the years. For example, this spring/summer (S/S 2018) bags with oversized hardware might be trendy, like big chains, locks etcetera. While this fall it might be out of fashion. It would be a shame not to use this bag anymore…
So what can we do?
- Handles – first of all, you could vary with your handles. When you make them detachable you could switch between chains and leather ones every once in a while! you could also change between a crossbody bag with a long strap to a handbag with a short handle. A multi-purpose bag, don’t you think…?
- Accessories – lately we have also seen a great deal of bag accessory trends. Whether you hang a clochette on your bag (DIY here), a tassel (DIY here) or a fake fur pompom chain you will get a completely different style.
- Leather details – when you choose your details and your hardware, you should choose wisely. You could, for example, make a little loop of leather and you can attach either an oversized D-ring that can be removed, a golden leopard (to participate in the crazy animal bag trend) or just nothing…
Got a little bit of inspiration? Well, I do so I am gonna return to my drawing table (a.k.a. kitchen table a.k.a. my leathercraft workstation a.k.a. blog writing table –> also multifunctional ;)!). And let’s try to make a classic shape trendy again and again.
