It is just unbelievable. The year 2017 is almost over and it is already time for a new flashback of the past year. On the one hand, it feels like it was yesterday I wrote the flashback to 2016 but on the other hand, there has been so many changes, new projects and beautiful moments the past year it seems like much longer than a year ago. Let’s take a look back to my new years’ resolutions of 2017 and the most memorable moments of the past year! Embrace yourself for quite a long post but so much has happened. What were my new year’s resolutions again… Let’s see:
Find out how to add a lining in bags properly
The very first new years’ resolution was one to develop myself as a leathercraft woman. A new skill to improve me and of course my bags! In the Ladies bag, I’ve implemented this one to make a drop lining. Before I’ve never heard of this term but now it’s just so obvious why they call it that… And besides this drop lining, I’ve been experimenting with a structured bag which is the addition of an extra layer between the outer and the inner layer of the bag to give it more ‘body’.
And just in this last month of 2017 I finally tried a fully glued lining in the ‘oversized’ envelop clutch. But that’s something you will see in the next year when I post the final ‘making of’ post. So overall I can cross this one off my list!
Find the latest trends for all the seasons to come in the fashion week
Well, this one wasn’t that hard…. I just love watching Fashion week photo’s and show. Somehow I just try to spot the common trends or the most remarkable one I can also implement in my designs! Though besides the two fashion week trends; fall/winter 2017 and spring/summer 2018 you can also see some upcoming trends every now and then not on the runway. Such as the basket bag trend last summer and the DIY straps you could have made for it!
Cover 4 designers and their history or style
I’ve made this new years resolution to keep inspired and to work on my skills. Even though I have only covered two designers, a Dutch designer Fred de la Bretonnier and the famous French designer and legendary lady, Coco Chanel, I haven’t felt one moment not inspired. I actually felt like I have too few hours in a day hahaha. I would love to make more, do more etc. but I also have to pass my internships and exams… Though I certainly can recycle this one for next years resolutions!
Get my own leather stamp
I actually nailed this new years resolution!! Not only did I get my own leather stamp but I also found a little piece of history to stamp my logo with; the Kingsley hot stamping machine. The only problem is… it takes time to figure out the right settings and usage of the machine to get the perfect little stamp. Too less heat and the foil won’t stick, too much heat the foil will be all over the place … you get the idea. But every time I add my logo I will get better and better at this!
Besides ordering my leather stamping logo I also made my very own rubber stamp. I bought a piece of laser rubber and figured out how to make your own stamps by “hand”. Isn’t it amazing…? I definitely loved it!
Make my first money on a (personalised) product
It isn’t that I don’t want to earn money by making products but I am
a little bit a perfectionist… Why would anyone want to buy my products in the first place? Time passing by and getting more and more compliments about my products and more and more requests I thought well… Let’s give it a try. Not long ago I took my very first order and I am working my butt off, between the Christmass dinners, to finish it as soon as possible. They are as much excited as I am!
Hit the 100 readers on my blog
It might seem silly but I was very insecure about whether or not anyone would like to read my blog when I started this little over a year ago. I read all the blogs about starting a blog, I even did some digging in some books about blogging. But overall I got the picture of… ‘you should start writing for yourself and whenever you feel comfortable with your writings, you just should put your blog online’. Well I did, and the first few months I got 6 visitors the first month, 33 unique visitors the next and 45 unique visitors in December 2016. I wanted to reach more people, and preferably worldwide! I wanted to find fellow leather lovers, creatives and bag fanatics! So I set the goal to 100 readers a month.
Well, the counter did go up a bit in the next few months, 82 – 71 – 93 and then in April 2017 I got for the very first time over the 100 unique viewers, 214 unique viewers in just one month! It might still be a small amount for other bloggers but I was so proud! Now it was time to keep you all visiting every week, every month and the rest of my blogging life ;). It was a motivation for me to keep developing interesting posts, DIY’s and kept sharing my projects. Since that month it never went below 100 viewers so I must say, thank you all for being so loyal. Thank you for your interest and thank you for being my inspiration and power to go on with Florine Leather & Style!
Design a whole collection line of products
This new years resolution might also be one to recycle. This year I did design a small stationary collection but I definitely want to do this more often. To create a whole collection that matches and goes well together! I just have to clear some time to curl up on the couch and just start drawing!
Give a try on box stitching
Whenever I want to try something new, there is one person who loves to be my guinea pig. Alright, maybe he receives my guinea pigs and takes care of them hahaha. So, early in the year 2017 I gave the box stitching a try and produced an amazing looking watch box… Whenever you get the hang of it, a box stitch isn’t that hard at all. You just have to follow the steps and work very precise (as you always have to do with leathercraft!)
Create a DIY-instruction kit for followers for free
This was a project which was on the shelf for way too long. I just didn’t know if anybody was interested in a DIY-instruction kit. So just to give it a try I made one for my one-year blog anniversary! And the lovely Sandra did win the competition. So I had to send it all the way up to New York (love having readers worldwide!!!). If you follow my Instagram as well, you might have seen it on the timeline. She told me she loved it and I am very curious about the end result of her DIY-kit!
Make one product especially for myself to learn more
This was a little project to explore some new techniques, new styles and keep it a secret from you all if it was a complete failure… I must say, I haven’t made that many projects for myself. I actually should take some time to do so. But there are a few projects of the past year 2017 I am quite proud of! For example, the round festival bag! Never made a circle bag before, never did the ‘braiding/weaving’ before and I had to make a round zipper. The first two were a success but I am not satisfied yet with the round zipper… it just got too many wobbles and bobbles in it… something to figure out in the future!
Add some leather ideas to my interior (leather desk pad, leather coasters, leather boxes, leather handles etc.)
Since I moved to a new apartment halfway 2017 I just ‘had’ to implement some leather textures in my home. I could describe them all but it might be easier to just sum up a list. Because it is quite much… So this new years resolution can be ticked off the list for sure!
- Leather desk pad
- Leather Diamond paperweight
- Leather & wood tapas plates
- Leather tissue box cover
- Leather covered picture frame
- Leather Christmas coasters
And last but not least my New Years Longterm Wishes…
- Find the time and money to follow a leather course (in Italy for example?)… –> Well, I just couldn’t find those two requirements yet haha… still searching!
- Host a meet and greet with several leather-&-style lovers to learn and share some tips and tricks with each other. –> Let’s see, they were longterm-projects right? Though, anybody interested?!
- Travel to other creative parts of the world to find out more about leather, leather craft or style. –> Well I did some travelling to Greece to visit my favourite craftsman and got the address of an awesome leather store! But I just want to travel more and more!!
- (Future) find a place to have a small workplace for my leather craft. –> I should start to think to redecorate our
littletiny garden house to create some room for at least some of my expanding tool collection ;)…
Overall I can say that I have crossed 10 out of 11 of the new years’ resolutions of 2017 of my list! A year of many changes, for Florine Leather & Style but also in my personal life with a new apartment and starting my internship. Now I know this much can happen in one year, makes me curious what the next year will bring! Lot’s of love, make NYE one to remember and hope to see you all next year!
