I’ve finished my first of four internships this year and got a few weeks off before the next start. Since I just can’t do nothing for weeks, I was looking for some to do. And just to “relax” a little I accepted my first custom-mad-bag orders!! It is still strange to think that other people also like the bags and accessories I make… but since I’ve got so many ideas and love to design with others I thought let’s give it a try. I’ve written in previous posts how to design your very own design (here & here) but how do you do it for a customer business-wise?
As you all know by now I loveeeee Pinterest. It is the perfect medium to find and search for inspiration. For me, pictures and sketches are much more inspirational compared to just words. I’ve always got an image in my head but to translate it to the customer I usually open Pinterest and a scatch book and just show them what the options are for handles, bottoms, hardware etcetera. If their wishes are all over the place and I can’t figure out what they mean I asked them to make a mood board. From that point on I extract all the key items I need for an awesome custom-made design.
A custom-made design is a custom-made design for me if you’ve added a little of both the customer and you to it. I’ve asked them to first compile a little list of their wishes. Questions to answer were;
- What type of bag would you like?
- What size do you prefer?
- –> “where does the bag go with that girl” or the other way around?
- What type of material should the bag be made of?
- What would be a comfortable price range?
- –> HELP….I don’t know….
A comfortable price range is difficult to set, at least for me on this point… You don’t want to scare the customer away but I also would like to earn a little bit on the project. I haven’t figure out the perfect way to scale a project price-wise. Whenever I can’t come up with the answers, I will do some more googling But in the meantime, I would love to consult you, ladies. How do you determine your prices?
In the next few weeks, you can follow my project along, on my Instagram story. I hope my customers will love it as much as I do!! Besides that, I think I should start on a business plan, don’t you think? Stay tuned for more projects post, new techniques and DIYs !!
