With trends passing by like hours it is almost impossible not to buy some items in the quick fashion industry. Although I do like to predict next seasons trend and incorporate them in my own designs. Why would you choose for quick fashion and why for a hand made product… Well, let’s compare the two.
Most quick fashion items you own are probably designed by a designer you don’t know. Who are, for example, the designers of H&M or Zara…? Maybe you are the lucky one who can afford items of a high fashion designer like a Michael Kors bag or maybe even Chanel. But even then you are not sure it is designed by the designer himself instead of one of their in-house designer. Though when a product is handmade, you can it design to your needs or preferences. You can choose the colour, material and look for next season. But you also might want to keep in mind that you want to use an item a little bit longer than one season. A little trick I use in my designs, make a classic design and add a trendy feature!
If you follow my blog for a while now, you will know if you are only a “free-time” leather craftswoman it will take a long time to design, make and finish a bag. Especially if you don’t use a sewing machine and stitch it all by hand you will need some patience and time on your hand. There are of course some DIYs which are less complicated and some of them can be made in one day.
In quick fashion time is money so the more money they want to make the quicker the items have to be made. And as said before, one minute the look is “in” and one minute later it is old fashion. So before the trend has passed they want to make sure you bought your perfect trendy item from them.
Of course there will be exceptions but overall I can conclude of my experience that the quick fashions items are made as quickly as they can which results in a lesser quality. In comparison to this, often hand made items are made with a lot of love and care. But more importantly, when you put all that time into one project, you want to use the best materials you can afford.
If we take all points mentioned above you can summarise the final price…
- unknown designer + little time + lesser quality = “cheap”
- Famous designer (or you) + a lot of man hours + the best quality = expensive
That is the only thing we just can’t change. Once you want the best products for cheap you might want to look in a secondhand store or you don’t mind spending time. Because if you find the perfect, good looking bag for a bargain it is often too good to be true. It can include unethical conditions, salary or times for the creators of the item or there is something wrong with the product itself…
To answer the question if you should buy anything in the quick fashion stores or make them yourself, often a combination of all might be the best. I always try to buy good quality of quick fashion industry with a classic twist. So, I will often be able to wear or use those products also the following seasons. But whenever I have the time I love to make my own products, just because I know the designer, the time it take, the quality of the product and can decide my own price!
What is your opinion on this matter? What do you make yourself and which items do you buy in the quick fashion industry?
