I gather all kinds of interior ideas lately. I like to combine brown with white and black to create a calm and natural look for your home. It is after all the place you come home after a long day of work to relax and enjoy the evening. Also when you buy a bouquet of flowers the colours will “pop” in these tones. Eventhough, I don’t use many colours, I like to experiment with textures. Therefore I have chosen to make with you a DIY tissue box cover with my favourite black embossed crocodile leather.
What to you need?
– A tissue box (square or rectangular)
– A design and mall
– Cutting mat
– Stanley knife
– Ruler
– Pricking iron
– Leather needles
– Waxed thread (also black or a contrasting colour)
Step 1 – design your cover
In my design of the tissue box cover you might see a little bit influence of origami. At least that was originally my inspiration. You know, back in the days as a child you learned to fold a box of origami paper. Well, it reminded my a little bit of that. The tissue box is 11 x 12 cm so make sure you use the right measurements for the flaps if you like to use my design as well.
Step 2 – create paper mall
As always, make a paper mall! It is such an important step you might want to skip, but don’t do it. You will thank me later. Once you have drawn the design, mark the place where you need to cut the hole for the papers tissues to come out.
Step 3 – cut and prick
The next step is to cut the design with the Stanley knife or leather knife. Make sure you knife is sharp, or sharpen it as I explained in this post (click here). Once cut, you can continue with pricking the crosses on the side to attach the flaps to.
Step 4 – finish and stamp your stamp
Before you sew everything together you want to finish all the edges. I use the edge paint from the trial package of Gardini. In this case “semi – dense black”. If you can, this is also the time to make your mark on your product!
Step 5 – sew and you’re done
Check if all the edges are dried before you continue. Sew with the saddle stitch the flaps together. Pop the box in and enjoy your good looking tissue box cover!!!
If we could only give everything a more sophisticated look with a leather cover. But for now I have to give this little baby a place, maybe on the beauty table or on the coffee table. It just transformeren from a object you want to hide to a real eye-catcher!
