While the fashion week just ended in Milan and will continue in the last Fashion week in Paris, it is time to get out our sketchbooks and start processing all our inspiration for the Fall and Winter. But wouldn’t it be nice to also have a good looking sketchbook? I thought so…Therefore ladies, a new DIY to spice up those books, also applicable to notebooks of course, with some crocodile embossed leather.
This time it was a little late in the evening so with these black and white photos you will be able to see at least something.
What do you need?
- A sketchbook – mine was A5
- A piece of leather to cover a closed book & two times 3cm x height extra (5mm marge over the edge).
- Ruler
- Stanley knife
- Pricking irons
- Wax
- Thread (matching or contrasting up to your taste)
- Leather needles
- Leather glue
- A coin for the round edges
Step 1 Measure and Mark
Measure a rectangle piece of leather.depending on the size of your CLOSED sketchbook. Since when you close it it will need more space. Don’t forget a 5mm marge for the stitching. Besides the outside cover, you will also need two pieces to partly cover the inside.
Step 2 Cutting and Rounding
Once measured and marked, it is time to cut. But for the last time… make sure it’s also big enough to close the book. Once you have cut all pieces, I also choose to round the edges for a clean look. As always I use the object I have around me, this time a coin make perfect round edges.
Step 3 Glueing and Pricking
The next step is to glue all edges. Be careful with the glue around the border and not to glue inside the cover pockets. Thereafter, mark the stitching line on about 3mm from the edge and prick the stitching holes.
Step 4 Sewing and Finishing
The next and final step is to sew it all togeather and finish the edges to your own preference. Place the cover over the sketchbook and each time you look at it, it might give you more and more inspiration.
I can’t wait to start sketching. Carrying this book with me will hopefully inspire others to check out this DIY. So let me know what you think about it and don’t forget to send my your results!
