All my exams are over (for now..) and I will be having a little more time to continue with all the projects I have laying around or on my list. ‘The project list’ is getting longer and longer cause one project leads to even more inspiration for others. At the moment I am still working on The black Bag, piece by piece it will come together in the end. Even though it isn’t finished yet, I would like to give you a little update so you ladies can follow my process of making leather bags. But first of all, I wish you all a very happy valentines day and hope you have stolen your valentine’s heart with your DIY valentine hearts. Forgot to make one…here is the DIY.
Design of the Black Bag
In my last posts on how-to-design-in-10-steps, you could follow my steps, how a bag design is made. Don’t forget to make it first of paper before you ruin your beautiful (precious) piece of leather. Luckily my design worked and I could start the next step, drawing and cutting of the pieces.
The next step
I am making the body of the bag out of one piece. It is important to check your leather for scars or little bug bites (if of course, you are using full grain leather). If you forgot how to recognise your type of leather, check my 101 leather guide over here. This body will be supported by a leather piece on the bottom with stiffening paper in between and the two side panels.
The straps have a cotton core to make sure the ‘elastic’ leather won’t stretch that much. Besides the strength of the cotton core, the round shape of the straps makes it feels comfortable to the hand.
Where to start sewing
The order of making all of the separate parts doesn’t matter, the assembling of those parts does. So you can first make the one handle, the closure strap, the bottom part and another handle, it is all up to you. Once I have made all parts, it is time to put it all togeather. Before you will put the side panels in the bag you will have to make sure you have put all the handles and the closure strap on.
Will be continued…
At the moment I am on this point of putting all of the parts to the body of the bag. Don’t worry I will keep you updated. And if you really want the latest new on the black bag, follow me on Instagram. Besides, don’t forget to enrol at my email list. It was somehow broken for a little while but it is up and running again!! So you will be the first to see a new post.
