Either if you have bought your leather bag or if you have made them yourself it will have cost a lot of money or precious time. To make sure it will last longer than a human life you will have to take care of it. Since leather is a hide it will react just like ours. It needs moisturising and from time to time a little cleaning. Be careful what kind of leather you have because not all kinds like to be cleaned with water.
So how do you take care of your leather bag? I will clean and moisturise a tote bag. As a little sign of love to the bag. I have bought this one in Greece like 5 years ago. If you have never been to Greece, it is a real leather Walhalla‼ Though, ever since no care has been given to this bag at all. There was a real challenge here for me to see if we could bring some life back in this leather.
Clean with care!
The first step was to clean this bag. I have used a natural soap (‘Groene Driehoek’ in the Netherlands) so no chemicals could damage the leather and only some dirt or oils from our hands or body would be removed. Once the water touched the leather I saw it absorb so quickly, since the leather was very dry. Because we had last summer a, very rare, hot day in the Netherlands I didn’t have to wait long before the bag was completely dry.
After a firm scrub, our skin would appreciate a rich moisturising cream, well so does your bag. I have applied a special cream for leather shoes from our cobbler in town but you could also use a special leather cream. As you can see, I have only done one-half of the bottom, well you do see the difference. Let’s give this bag some extra cream and then polish it with a clean cloth if you like leather to shine. In real life, the end result looks even greater than in the picture, believe me!
Leather will become more and more beautiful while using it. It will get scratches and stains (even if you try to overcome it) over the years and years. But to keep it also in a good condition you will have to take care of it. Do you also have a bag to take care of after reading this post?
