After a lovely holiday in Spain, where I loved the tapas so much I shared with you a little DIY to spice up your own tapas plate presentation here, I continued almost immediately to Greece. One more week of sun and I have been there before. Every year I meet more and more lovely people but the last two years… Well, I just have to tell you the whole story about the Leather Walhalla!
Trip down memory lane
Six years ago I have discovered Greece during my first holiday with my boyfriend. I fell even more in love with him but also with Greece. What a lovely country it is, the beaches, nature, the white houses with blue accents and the LEATHERCRAFT! I have never seen so much leather stores in one street and such special products they sell. Those kinds of leather bags, belts, flip-flop’s or other accessories I have never spotted at home. Many of those stores do sell the same products for tourists but if you search well you can find those one-of-a-kind-products they make in the back of their stores. I have been lucky to find such products but more important the very skilled craftsman behind it all, on Crete.
After seeing a small doctor bag at his store we were impressed and asked him if he could also make a bigger size as a travel bag for us. ‘How long do you stay in Greece?’ he asked. Luckily for us, we had booked holiday long enough to see the finished result and take it with us home. He made one big one for my boyfriend and a more ladylike size for me. During our holiday we checked almost day to day with him to see the progress and to check out his tips and tricks of leathercraft. Though I hadn’t started leathercraft at that time, it certainly made me think about creating such amazing products by myself.
“Come here, my colleague!”
Last year we came back to the same town and of course paid a visit to this amazing man. After a few looks and thoughts, he recognised us. “Haven’t I made those travel bags for you?” he asked. After a little bit small talk, I told him that I have been practising leathercraft for a little while now. Immediately he began a discussion on a whole different level and was so enthusiast. “Come here, my colleague”, when he invited me to his work place; what a lot of equipment, leather and hardware. I just had to take a picture to share with you.
The other reason for me to visit him in the shop was because I was looking for a small camera bag. One to carry the camera with me without the letters JUST-TAKE-MY-CAMERA-IT-IS-IN-HERE as seen on the standard camera bags. Though bags big enough for my camera had two compartments. When we asked him again to make such a bag for us he told us “why don’t you make it yourself, this is the place I got my leather from. It is also on Crète.”
Oh yeah! The real deal Greek leather supplier in the pocket! Of course, I have checked it out and will share with you the rest story real soon. To be continued …
